Mini Miglia 2022

It is with great sadness that we report the passing away of long-time Knowldale navigator and friend Peter Whatmough at the age of 73. He had been suffering for some time from an asbestos related lung disease.
Pete's first attempts at rallying were as a driver in his Cooper S in the late sixties/early seventies, but he soon swapped seats and started co-driving, doing many events with his longtime friend John Wood, in Woody's (in)famous matt black Mk.1 Escort.
In the early eighties they obtained sponsorship from Carcraft in Rochdale, who were Lada agents, and competed in the Lada Challenge one-make championship, winning the 1983 Lada Challenge outright. They then progressed to a Vauxhall Nova which they dragged to far higher finishing positions than it had any right to.
By the late eighties Pete was occupying the left-hand seat of Simon Lord's Fiesta with some success, particularly on Belgian events.
Perhaps Peter's greatest success was with Neil Freeman in 1993 in their Peugeot 205 when a highly successful season culminated in them winning the BTRDA Gold Star Championship.
In recent years whilst not actively competing he maintained his interest in Knowldale and motorsport in general and was preparing a Mini for sprints and hillclimbs.
He is survived by his wife Sarah and daughter to whom we extend our deepest sympathies.
