June Treasure Hunt
The second hunt, a tour reaching the outskirts of Darwen was undertaken by five crews. Once again Ann and Andrew Lord claimed victory with 60 correct answers from a possible 63. Phil and Aideen Dean came second (56/63), followed very closely by Deryck Pickup and Mike Corfield (55/63), Stephen and Jane Broadbent (54/63) and Ted Roberts and JoyceBirtwistle (45/63.)
The route for the July Treasure Hunt is also available for download from the Members area or by email from organiser Deryck Pickup.
May Treasure Hunt
Deryck's Tour de Ripponden, the first in the (DIY) Treasure Hunt series which will form the major part of the 2021 Social Championship, entertained five crews in May. Andrew and Ann Lord scored 68 points to claim victory with Ted Roberts and Steve Tweedale coming home second with 66, Phil and Aiden Dean third with 60. Joyce Birtwistle navigated Ted ("I'll have another go") Roberts to fourth spot with 50 points, ahead of David Clegg and Vicky Bottomley on 47.5. Although they asked for the route, Phillip Mills and new members Andy Robinson and Thomas Wardle failed to submit answers.
Peter Whatmough (RIP)
It is with great sadness that we report the passing away of long-time Knowldale navigator and friend Peter Whatmough at the age of 73. He had been suffering for some time from an asbestos related lung disease.
Pete's first attempts at rallying were as a driver in his Cooper S in the late sixties/early seventies, but he soon swapped seats and started co-driving, doing many events with his longtime friend John Wood, in Woody's (in)famous matt black Mk.1 Escort.
In the early eighties they obtained sponsorship from Carcraft in Rochdale, who were Lada agents, and competed in the Lada Challenge one-make championship, winning the 1983 Lada Challenge outright. They then progressed to a Vauxhall Nova which they dragged to far higher finishing positions than it had any right to.
By the late eighties Pete was occupying the left-hand seat of Simon Lord's Fiesta with some success, particularly on Belgian events.
Perhaps Peter's greatest success was with Neil Freeman in 1993 in their Peugeot 205 when a highly successful season culminated in them winning the BTRDA Gold Star Championship.
In recent years whilst not actively competing he maintained his interest in Knowldale and motorsport in general and was preparing a Mini for sprints and hillclimbs.
He is survived by his wife Sarah and daughter to whom we extend our deepest sympathies.

Treasure Hunt Series
The deadline for the first DIY Treasue Hunt has been extended to the end of May. The next TH will be available at the beginning of June (watch out for the email invitation.) From then we excpect to have one per month until September and these will form the Social Championship for 2021. More events may be added, circumstance permitting!
DIY (On Your Own) Treasure Hunts
The first event in the 2021 Social Championship is a Treasure Hunt organised by Deryck Pickup. All members should have had an email from Deryck with the details. The TH can be done at any time to suit the entrant before the closing date. The route will be emailed out on request and the answers will be emailed back to Deryck. Once a few have taken part we will start to publish the results online.
Update For 2021 - (Late) Autumn Tour Cancelled
We have come to the conclusion that we cannot run the JC Mills (Late) Autumn Tour on 20th March as we had hoped. Although Motorsport UK will begin issuing permits at the end of this month, we feel COVID restrictions will still prevent us from running the event. Even dates in late June can't be guaranteed at present. After that the calendar is likely to be very busy and we need to start preparations for the Mini Miglia in October. We apologise to all of you who've waited with us for the Tour and look forward to seeing you on the John Clegg Mini Miglia.
Dates For 2021
The organisers of the John Clegg Mini Miglia and JC Mills Autumn Tour have decided to swap the dates of these events in 2021. The new dates are:
Saturday 20th March - The Spring (Late! Autumn) Tour
Saturday 2nd October - The John Clegg Mini Miglia Tour
The Autumn Tour 2020 was ready to go, planned with no need for social interaction and no food provided at the start or finish. Since we don't know what restrictions might be in place by March, we believe our best option is to attempt to run the Autumn Tour then. Hopefully by the summer we will be able to plan and in October run the Mini Miglia as normal.
We will contact all past entrants in due course.
Autumn Tour 2020 - Cancelled
With great regret we have to inform everyone (in light of the recent increase locally in Covid 19 cases and under guidance from MotorSport UK) that the Knowldale Autumn Tour can no longer take place.
It is not a decision we have taken lightly but after the very recent change of circumstances we hope everyone will agree that it is the only responsible thing to do.
We thank all who entered and trust you will enter our future events in more stable times.
Retired rally photographer David Wakeley has sent in this photograph which he thinks was taken around 1979 on Otterburn. It will be on the Knowldale Facebook group page as well. If you recognise the car and crew please comment there and I will update this page.

The John Clegg Mini Miglia 2019
Supported by Therma-Clad
As in recent years, the 2019 John Clegg Mini Miglia Tour started from the NWA Auction site at Crooklands (just off J36 of the M6.) A Touring Assembly of 135 miles was planned over classic road rally routes. By popular request, the finish whold be at Banny's Fish & Chip Restaurant by Boundary Mill in Colne.
Many hours of strong winds and heavy rain before and during the event caused the Clerk of Course to call an end to proceedings at the Fat Lamb lunch halt when the course opening car was unable to find a safe route to the finish.
The John Clegg Mini Miglia 2019 from the Course Car.
In the weeks running up to the event and bearing in mind the ‘Beast’ from last year, we were worried about the possibility of snow on the higher parts of the route. However, the day before the event the detailed area forecast was for wind, rain and possibly some early fog, but no snow or ice....... read more
A full entry for the MIni Miglia!
The date has been set - Saturday 16 March 2019. The Regs and entry forms are on the website.
The photograph to the right of John with a Ford Zodiac rally car has recently arrived with us via Sarah Clegg (John's daughter.) It was sent to her by Jim Porter (RIP) with the following description:
"It was at the end of the 3 Cities (Munich-Vienna-Budapest) Rally October 1969. Ford wanted to promote the Zodiac via competition success & British Vita Racing got the job. We won the class but were about 14th overall - end of promotion of Zodiac!
The trophy on the right is a porcelain vase which I rescued from Rochdale a while back. Brian Gillibrand had it as the office ash tray.......
The metal trophy was given to me by Norman 2 or 3 years ago. He had removed it from British Vita for safe keeping."
Below a team photo after the Danube Rally - caption to the right., also from Sarah. Possibly 1965 - there is video at https://youtu.be/55mLBpDd4xk and https://youtu.be/_7d0nMT7nQs. The second link is particularly interesting for us at about 1 min 30 secs in.
Final Treasure Hunt
At the last committee meeting it was decided to postpone the final treasure hunt of the series due to take place on 14th September. The nights are getting too short. The event may take place on a Sunday morning - more details when decided.
Treasure Hunt Friday 24th August
Deryck put on a great run up through Whitworth then avoiding the centre of Bacup to run over Sharneyford and up to Sourhall. From there we turned towards Portsmouth before climbing up to the Long Causeway and then skirted Todmorden via Lumbutts before returning via the Lake to Milnrow. Crews still out after 8.30 found it difficult to spot clues in the failing light.
Treasure Hunt Friday 3rd August
The third Treasure Hunt in the series of five, this one organised by Steve Broadbent took us out over Buckstones and around Scammonden and Pike End before returning via the Lake. A selection of cryptic clues ensured that no one returned with a clean sheet.
Steve Tweedale & Deryck Pickup 66pts
Philip Mills & Family 65pts
Terry Mills & Beryl 60pts
Steve & George Warrington 52pts
Andrew & Anne Lord 52pts
Thanks to all who took part
Rochdale Classic Car Show
We had six cars on display at Rochdale Classic Car Show and plenty of interest from the visitors. Our new banners were on display with cars from Ted (Stag), Deryck (TR6), Terry & Robert (Subaru), Steve & Paul (Mini & Micra) and Tim & Steve (MG ZR) Photos are in the Gallery and in the banner above. Many thanks to Ted and Paul for the organisation.
Treasure Hunt & Social Championship
The second Treasure Hunt organised by Paul Stringer took cars on a tour of Saddleworth. Torrential rain failed to deter the six hardy crews from seeking out pink flowers and polo mints. A late detour into Milnrow village to purchase holes in mints saw Steve Tweedale & Deryck Pickup emerge victorious. NEXT EVENT FRIDAY 3rd AUGUST

Treasure Hunt & Social Championship
The first Treasure Hunt of the summer took the eight cars entered from the Cricket Club start to Ramsbottom via Owd Betts then Summerseat and Walshaw before returning to Milnrow via Pilsworth and Birch. The closure of the M62 slip road at Heywood caught out most crews and led to the cancellation of mileage penalties. Robert and Phillip Mills took the win on the tie breaker questions from Andrew and Ann Lord, both crews having 39 correct answers. NEXT EVENT FRIDAY 13th JULY

John Clegg Mini Miglia Tour 2018
The Beast From The East 2 didn't deter the hardy entrants and couldn't hold back the Knowldale team from staging another excellent Mini Miglia Tour.
